Gemonio

A town with ancient origins, its independence also has a long-standing and well-established history, based on the institution of the vicinia. Only in the Napoleonic era was Gemonio joined with Caravate, creating the municipality of “Gemonio ed uniti”. This union, proposed immediately following the Unification of Italy, was bitterly opposed and was no longer taken into account even in 1927, when most of the municipalities of the upper Varese area were reformed and the province of Varese was created.

Panoramic postcard of Gemonio, with the station on the left Another view of the passenger building at Gemonio, 1970s Church of San Pietro (1.1 km from the station): the church has its origins in the 11th century and today has three naves (originally it had only one). The right nave dates to the 15th century. Inside you can admire the excellent frescoes dating back to a period between the 15th and 17th century. The square in front of the church is surrounded by chapels of the Stations of the Cross, built in 1768
