Saronno - Seregno
This section was built by Società Anonima per la Ferrovia Novara-Seregno as an integral part of the entire line and was opened to traffic on 31 December 1887.
In 1890, operation of the line was granted to Ferrovie Nord Milano by the FNS, and it was one of the last lines to be electrified, between 1955 and 1956.
Just two years after its electrification, on 31 August 1958, it was closed to passenger traffic, replaced by bus routes and used solely for freight traffic, which was constantly heavy due to the high number of factories along the line; electrification was abandoned in 1977.
Over the 1990s, several proposals were put forward for reopening the passenger service, until finally, in January 2010, work began on rebuilding the line. This included restoring electrification and doubling the track in the Saronno-Groane section, with the new Saronno-Saronno Sud route which reconnects with the original one in the town of Ceriano Laghetto. The passenger service was reinstated on 9 December 2012.
