Novara - Saronno
The Novara - Saronno line with extension to Seregno originates on the 5th of September 1883. On this date a convention was agreed between the State Administration and Marco Visconti for the concession of the construction and operation of a standard gauge steam railway between Novara and Saronno, with an extension to Seregno, based on a plan drafted by Visconti and approved by the Board of Public Works on 24 June 1882.
The concession was set to end four years after its approval, a period of time that was used in full before the line was opened on 31 December 1887. Visconti oversaw the establishment of a specific company for the construction and operation of the railway, named “Soc. An. per la Ferrovia Novara-Seregno”, which in practice only managed operation of the line for the first three years. On 10 December 1890, a convention was therefore agreed between the company and Ferrovie Nord, put into effect as a public deed on 7 November 1894. This convention transferred operation of the line from Novara-Seregno to Ferrovie Nord.
An extension of the previous convention was then ratified between the two companies, extending management of the Novara-Seregno by Ferrovie Nord Milano to 31 December 1930, with the option of a 3-year rolling contract to continue until terminated by either party.
