Busto Arsizio Ferno section
In January 1998 the construction plan for the Busto Arsizio – Malpensa section was established. Work began on 23 March 1998 and were of a sizeable scale. The section was just under 12 kilometres long of double track, and the work involved the construction of numerous civil engineering works. These included the construction of the underground station of Ferno – Lonate Pozzolo (opened on 18 October 2009), the 58-metre single span metal truss viaduct crossing the Arno river (Lonate Pozzolo), the flying junction between Busto Arsizio and Magnano to eliminate any interference between the double track to Malpensa and the line for Novara, as well as an overpass, underpasses and other minor works. Despite the section’s short length, two substations were built to power the overhead lines due to the high power consumption of the vehicles in use. One is located in Ferno, the other in the system of three junctions at Sacconago. These junctions are a particularly interesting aspect of the overall work, as their triangular route allows direct access to Malpensa as well as from the Milano – Saronno route and the Novara route.
