Airport trackbed section

The section built within the airport trackbed, which initially included only one terminus station serving terminal 1, named “Malpensa Aeroporto”, extends for 3.5 kilometres. The line was delivered on 7 April 1999, complete with railway infrastructure, electrification systems, signalling and telecommunications equipment. Following an extremely intense pre-operational programme, on 30 May 1999 the “Malpensa Express” made its maiden journey between Milano Cadorna and Malpensa airport. From the outset, the station was laid out as a through station in order to leave the way open for a possible future extension to the airport’s second terminal. Work on a 3.6 km extension to terminal 2, largely in cuttings and tunnels, was begun in 2014. The complex construction site was sandwiched between the ultra-urbanised area of the airport and the forests of the Ticino Park: an area where unexploded bombs dating back to World War II and important archaeological finds had to be dealt with. The new “Malpensa T2” station was opened on 6 December 2016.
