Busto - Malpensa

In 1982, modernisation work being carried out at the historic Linate city airport, lasting fifty days, caused a dramatic increase in airport traffic diverted to Malpensa, with a price to pay that even for the time was much too high: the excessive use of transport links and of the adjacent parking areas prompted a rethink of the need for a direct link with the city centre, in light of the emerging plans for a “Great Malpensa”.

The plan for a direct railway link with Malpensa airport, which had already been presented in 1968 (the original technical drawing is on display in this room), began to take shape. The FNM route was preferred over the Rho – Gallarate FS route, partly because the work would be more cost-effective (and would be less disruptive to ordinary traffic) and partly due to the possibility of passing through Bovisa station, the “gateway” to the city, also in the concurrent plans for the Passante.

The final plan, whose cost was estimated at around 420 billion lire, was approved by the Ministry of Transport in May 1984. Work on the Saronno-Novara line, which subsequently also included the total renovation of Saronno station and the upgrading of the related facilities, began in June 1989.
