Sebino Orientale

The eastern part of Lake Iseo, with the towns of Sulzano, Sale Marasino and Marone, up to Toline, a hamlet of Pisogne, was the site of one of the most daring feats of engineering for the time when the railway line was built The series of tunnels allowing trains to run through it, as clearly illustrated by the photos of its construction, demonstrate the difficulties encountered even in the planning of such an undertaking, and it should be noted that, with the exception of superficial conservation work, the structures have remained the same ever since.

The island, listed as an “area of particular natural and environmental importance”, extends for about 5 km2 with a circumference of roughly 9 km, and is the largest lake island in Europe. It rises to 600 m above sea level: a mountain in the middle of a lake! It became famous in 2016 when it hosted the renowned work by artist Christo, “The Floating Piers”. The island is also home to picturesque villages, small harbours, green spaces, a castle, a wonderful sanctuary, trails for hiking or biking, not to mention breathtaking panoramic views. From the ISEO, SULZANO or SALE MARASINO stations, it takes just a few minutes to reach the docks, where you can take a Navigazione Lago d'Iseo ferry to one of the destinations on Monte Isola (Sensole, Siviano, Carzano, Peschiera Maraglio). In the north-east corner of the island lies Carzano, an old but beautifully preserved village. Carzano is famous for celebrating the Festa di Santa Croce every five years, when the city is decorated with over 100,000 paper flowers, a tradition dating back to medieval times. Perched above Sensole is the 14th-century castle, Rocca Martinengo. Another must-see is the Santuario della Madonna della Ceriola, which sits on the summit of the mountain, 600 m above sea level, in a panoramic position: the sanctuary boasts the best views on the island, a magnificent 360° panorama of the lake and the surrounding area. The view alone is worth the visit!
