Carugo - Giussano

Carugo lies in the Como area of the western Brianza region, between the Lambro and Terrò rivers. Urban development has spread through the southern area, while in the north there is a large area of woodland featuring natural springs, the Fontana del Guercio Regional Natural Reserve. Between 1929 and 1950, Carugo was merged with Arosio, excluding Bigoncio which was merged with Inverigo, taking the name of Carugo con Arosio; a few months later it was named Carugo Arosio. The municipality was abolished in 1950, and in its place the pre-existing towns of Arosio and Carugo were reinstated; Bigoncio, however, remained merged with Inverigo.
Giussano is also a significant town in the Lombardy province of Monza and Brianza. The mechanical, furniture, clothing and footwear industries were widespread throughout the area. Between 1881 and 1958, the town was also a southern terminus of the Milan-Carate-Giussano tramway.

The reserve’s natural features are particularly interesting from a hydrogeological point of view, as there are 11 springs, used by man probably as far back as Celtic times. The Borromeo irrigation channel runs through the entire protected area, and originates from the “Testa del Nan”, where it springs up among beautiful old fern-covered dry-stone walls.
