Saronno underpass and bridges
The “Sottopassaggio” is how Saronno locals commonly call the underpass, leaving no room for misunderstanding, except perhaps for the belief that this unique crossing had always been there, anticipating the railway branch and separating the sanctuary area.
Separated by its very nature, therefore, from the city centre, from the area that has always been the vibrant heart of the industrious city of Saronno, especially since the 1920s when it was provided with this impressive structure, a clear symbol of the exponential growth of its infrastructural importance in the local area. The other two structures meanwhile serve as a physical reminder of the interventions on the old Saronno-Seregno line, back in the days when the crossing, even on the side leading to Milan, was at ground level and controlled by an attendant.
