Quadronna viaduct
Another historic viaduct is also located in the municipal area of Malnate, over the Quadronna river, just past the famous junction of the same name between the Saronno-Varese route and the now closed-down Traversata line. This is the Quadronna viaduct, a massive concrete and brickwork structure with 6 arches of 12 metres each, which stands 30 metres tall over the valley below. When the second track between Saronno and Malnate was laid the bridge was expanded in 1926 in order to accommodate the three tracks (the two tracks for Saronno and Varese on the left, and the track for Grandate and Como on the right): still today, despite the passing of time and the restorations carried out over the years, the piers of the bridge clearly show the two construction techniques, the result of technologies from two different periods in history.
