M19 - Malpensa

Railway transport is the sector of activity of the FNM Group which has the greatest impact on landscape and biodiversity. Although upgrading and opening sections benefits the area, it is also essential that the work includes actions aimed at mitigating the impact on the landscape as much as possible. This is why FERROVIENORD works jointly with NORD_ING to evaluate the risks associated with the impact on the landscape at the relevant sites and the degree of impact of future work. This policy gave rise to the need to carry out accompanying post-intervention works, such as that carried out on the T1-T2 section at Malpensa. Because this section enters the area of the Ticino Natural Park, in 2018 maintenance work of the system was carried out and native species were planted, in addition to offsetting work already implemented in 2017.

Recently completed planting, in 2018

Following a specific Regional Decree, around 4,200 plants were removed in order to eliminate pests from the area pertaining to Malpensa airport, which will then be replaced with other species of tree. Post-intervention monitoring and monitoring of the planting were carried out in accordance with the Environmental Monitoring Plan.
