Body with a cylindrical base, on the front of which is a protuberance with a round window; on the back is a fixed handle with connections for attaching the light to the rear end of rolling stock.

On the top front of the cylinder is a truncated-cone shaped body culminating in a dome-shaped appendix, on which a half-ring-shaped carry handle is mounted.
It contains an oil lamp. Turning the handle at the top changed the light from red to white or green. The handle turned a cylinder surrounding the lamp with three sides: red glass, green glass, no glass.

The lamp signalled the back of a train.
It was inserted in the appropriate seat at the tail end of the rolling stock at the end of the train, showing the colour required according to the regulations, and was operated by the train conductor.
