A metal base frame with a supporting crosspiece resting on the ground at the back on the operator side; a semi-circle of sheet metal is welded to the crosspiece for the operator's foot. Two arms on the front of the frame end in hooks for fastening the apparatus to the rail. In the
middle, two parallel frames with chains and toothed wheels rotated by a hand-crank move forward and turn down a longitudinal shaft, at the end of which a drill bit is mounted in a bit holder. A ratchet on the side allows the shaft to move forward.
It was used to make small holes in the rails on the line for electrical connection with the signalling system and for earthing.
It was positioned with its front arms saddling the rail, toward which the shaft on which the drill bit was mounted moved from the side opposite the anchorage hooks.
