A horizontal cylinder of black sheet metal with a round glass door on the front, closed at the back, resting on an adjustable boxed support. A tube emerges from its top, closed at the end with a perforated ventilation cap. A handle is welded onto the tube. An oil lamp is anchored to its housing inside the lantern. A little door on one side can be opened to light and quench it.

It illuminated the back of the rotating disc signals that were positioned before the points coming into the station.

The rotating disc of the signal was manoeuvred by the stationmaster using a wire, raising the red glass or the green glass to the height of the lantern, as required.
