Cylindrical sheet metal reservoir, painted black, resting on a small cube-shaped pedestal. Above it is a rounded perforated bulb containing the wick coming out of the reservoir, to the wick holder, which has a decorated aureole providing a seat for the glass tube above it. At the base of the wick holder is a rotating knob, for raising the wick as it is consumed.

The wick is made of braided hemp (or cotton).

It was used to light up the workplace, particularly in stations and gatehouses that did not yet have electricity. It was also used in offices in the late nineteenth century.
